A Relationship Advice from Dan Savage that Makes Sense

In an interview with The Huffington Post, dating advice columnist and gay rights advocate Dan Savage shared what arguably could be a universal relationship advice for anyone, whether you are gay or straight, young and old.

Some singles have difficulty finding the right romantic partner for them. They feel like they are in a never-ending cycle of committing the same mistakes over and over. For those people who are frustrated with dating, here is what Savage has to say:

“I think the best thing for you to do is just live your life. Live a life that’s worth living, one where you do what you want to do, pursue your passions. That way, if you meet someone, they’ll be joining a life that’s already really good. And if you don’t meet anyone, you can still look back at the end and say, ‘You know what: I lived a really great life.'”

The advice makes total sense, but are we supposed to live a beautiful life and wait for the right partner to come? Savage says: “Keep going on dates. And don’t get bitter, either about women or the dating process. Life doesn’t owe you anything, and I think it’s up to all of us to go out and create a fulfilling life for ourselves.”

He also shared his relationship experience with his husband. “My husband Terry, he left the house an hour ago. We have a life together. But if he never comes back, I still need to have something here, a life of my own, one that’s fulfilling in itself.”

In a nutshell, the advice sounds good, but it is actually difficult to live by. Having to keep that sense of optimism throughout your rounds of dating rejections and heartbreaks is never easy, but we should never let our relationships define us. There is absolutely more to life than finding love and romance, such as following your dreams and goals.
